Can You Solve This? The Overlooked Dutch Creation Which Shaped our Contemporary Globe
There are numerous contenders for the designation as “planet’s most significant innovation.” The wheel. The movable type. The steam engine.
According to a new book, though, that title belongs to the automated sawmill invented by Dutch inventor Cornelis Corneliszoon during 1593.
“Prior to mechanised cutting, constructing a modest merchant vessel necessitated around ten sawyers working for 90 days,” writes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-powered lumber mills, an identical amount of cut lumber might be produced in less than a week.”
Owing to this rapid mechanical saw, which converted timber to boards using virtually no manual labor, the Dutch could build vessels faster than any other nation, which unleashed a century of Netherlands maritime, economic and artistic supremacy across the continent and the world.

Corneliszoon’s lumber mill, argues the writer, represented “mankind’s first true factory machine.” A windmill turned a gear. A single part converted its rotary movement to vertical action to power the cutting blade. A separate mechanism changed that same spinning motion into a sideway’s motion advancing the timber to the blade. A ratchet system moved the log forward a measured step each cycle.
“Each element seemed modest on its own. The Dutchman’s brilliance lay in how to integrate these parts so the machine acted in a perfectly controlled order, cutting with each downward stroke while moving on every return motion. It was an astonishingly clever application of fundamental parts.”
