India's capital Rises to Hazardous Haze After Celebrations
Tuesday brought inhabitants of the world's most polluted city encountered exposed to dangerously toxic air that was classified as the "alarming" category.
Extremely High Air Quality Measurements
Multiple areas of Delhi recorded an AQI over 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the recommended threshold set by the global health authority.
Particular areas, concentrations of toxic particulate matter reached peaks of 1800, amounting to 15 to 20 times higher than safe levels.
Pyrotechnics Restrictions and Current Changes
Beginning in 2020, the government had implemented a complete ban on the purchase and ignition of fireworks during celebrations due to their major role to the deadly pollution that engulfs the capital as the cold season approaches.
Nevertheless earlier this year, the current city leadership petitioned the highest court to propose a relaxation of the ban.
They proposed allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – which have been criticized by environmental experts as being only about 30% reduced emissions – as a balance between "cultural practices and ecological concerns".
Court Verdict and Enforcement
Despite concerns of environmental and health advocates, judges approved the request, stipulating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be ignited during designated time windows throughout the celebrations.
On Monday night, there was widespread violation of the time restrictions across the capital, with minimal regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the supposedly greener version.
Many monitoring devices throughout the city showed air quality spiking around late evening to some of the worst measurements observed during Diwali in at least three years.
Cross-Border Effects
The widespread use of fireworks during the festival also sparked a dispute with bordering Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistan's Punjab partially attributing deteriorating pollution levels in the city of Lahore on contaminants traveling from neighboring India following the festivities.
Persistent Pollution Crisis
The dangerously high levels of pollution in Delhi have continued as a major problem for fifteen-plus years, with the situation gradually deteriorating.
Around celebratory seasons, the amount of dangerous particulate matter in the air has been documented to shoot up to seventy percent above the worst records ever documented in China's capital, which was previously regarded as the planet's dirtiest metropolis.
Diverse Contamination Contributors
This crisis in the city is attributed to a mix of multiple factors including automobile exhaust, dust, construction activities, rubbish burning and smoke from agricultural fires in neighbouring states of farming communities.
Throughout these areas, rural residents routinely ignite agricultural waste to prepare for next season, generating dangerous pollution that becomes contained over the metropolitan area as cooler air arrives.
Public Health and Economic Impact
Both financial and medical toll on the approximately 33 million inhabitants residing in the Delhi area is substantial, according to various research.
These hazardous conditions causes elevated rates of neurological, heart and circulatory and breathing diseases, and can potentially cause malignancies.
The pollution is estimated to be responsible for ten thousand early deaths per year in the city.
