Space Traveler Reveals Emotional Distress After Wave of Backlash Post-Spaceflight
A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also featured high-profile passengers.
The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, describing a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the aftermath of the journey.
She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
The researcher, who has conducted studies in women's health research and operated research during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her scientific research and years of training to the historic significance of her roots – was buried under the tide of misogyny.
She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.
Her own goal of reaching space was paused after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.
Finding Solid Ground
Months following achieving her goal, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the followers whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.
She noted that amid the criticism, considerable good had emerged from the mission, such as elevated attention for her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.
The Historic Journey
The computer-piloted spacecraft lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that passed the Kármán line of space.
The diverse crew also featured accomplished professionals from various fields.
The enterprise behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company established by a Amazon founder.
