The global fast-food chain has pulled a holiday advert produced with generative AI after encountering widespread criticism on social media.

The 45-second ad was produced using generative AI clips and was originally uploaded publicly for the Dutch branch of McDonald's on 6 December.

Audience Reaction and Removal

Soon after it aired, viewers on social media criticized the implementation of AI in the film. Several labeled it "uncanny" and "poorly edited".

"This experience represents an key learning as we investigate the appropriate application of generative technology," stated a statement from the company.

The commercial was created for McDonald's by Dutch company TBWA\Neboko and American firm The Sweetshop. It portrayed a series of situations that might go awry over the holidays, using the tagline "the worst time of the year".

The Movement of AI in Advertising

Adverts that include AI-created content have emerged as a increasing trend among prominent companies, notably for the Christmas period.

  • Coca-Cola has recently launched back-to-back AI-generated holiday ads.
  • Inherent Limitations: Since videos made with current AI video tools are prone to distort the more extended they are, most such clips tend to be only a few seconds in length.
  • Broader Implications: The ad also sparked fears about automation in the production sector, with some observers noting it might reduce opportunities for camera crews.

Response from the Creators

Following the commercial being pulled, The Sweetshop's head, Melanie Bridge, spoke in support of the advert.

According to her, the creation took "seven weeks" and involved generating "thousands of takes" which were then edited during the edit "in the same way we would on any standard production".

"This wasn't just an AI gimmick," she said. "It was a film."

Mixed Audience Sentiment

While the McDonald's ad was predominantly criticized, the sentiment for other AI-generated holiday ads has been more mixed.

For instance, a recent AI-created Christmas ad from another major brand according to analysis achieved a 61% "favorable response" from online commenters.

However, several companies have also received backlash for using AI in advertising. Luxury brand Valentino, for example, was criticized for advertisements that some described as "low-effort" and "disturbing".

The situation underscores the evolving debate within the marketing and creative industries about the trade-off between technological innovation and human craftsmanship.
