The Legendary Anime Ends a 27-Year Era in the Coming Year

This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for long-running series, with Toei Animation revealing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and featured dozens of filler arcs. Starting in January, once the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the anime will take a quarterly break until spring, when the next major arc kicks off.

New Release Strategy

Going forward, the series will release a pair of cours every year for a cap of two dozen installments. The studio states this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more material, rhythm, and pacing of the original manga.” Yet, producers conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which suggests more One Piece content, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, scheduled to debut during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The One Piece anime previously took a six-month pause that started in late 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to enhance the visuals and allow the manga to build a lead to avoid a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The anime couldn't benefit more from this respite, and it has been able to deliver fans with countless action sequences, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than previously.

Embracing Seasonal Format

While a few summary installments sprouted up during this season, the positive effects of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the odd pause in the action. This additionally allows the manga, which is presently in the thick of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the anime. Per the news, this may lead to one episode of the anime covering one chapter, with some instead covering one and a half chapters or more to make up for time.

It's the end of an era for anime, as the epic saga is the final major title to abandon the old-school way of production, which prioritized airing for most of the calendar. It's the reason why classics such as Naruto, and naturally itself have numerous side stories, and the standard of the art can vary widely between one episode and the following. Today, anime production is organized in cours, with a couple maximum releasing each year, allowing for better quality and greater accuracy to the original work.
